Man busted in sting tied to funny money

Athens-Clarke police think a convicted felon who sold guns and counterfeit money to an undercover federal agent last month played a key role in spreading fake money around Athens in recent months.

But investigators aren't any closer to finding who is printing the bogus bills because 34-year-old Boris Terrell Gresham has not cooperated, police said.

"We believe he knows who the printer is, but he's playing stupid," Athens-Clarke police Detective Beverly Russell said Tuesday. "He could have helped us and himself out, but he apparently would rather go to jail.

"We never thought he was making the money, and we're still on the trail of the people who are," she said.

Gresham has been held without bail at the Clarke County Jail since Nov. 23.

That day, he met with an undercover agent with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in an Oconee Street parking lot and sold him an undisclosed number of guns and counterfeit bills, police said.
