Funny finale for local comic contest
The Athens version of "Last Comic Standing" began in September with 16 comedians and has wound down to the finals, with a University of Georgia student from LaGrange squaring off against a UGA staffer for the heavyweight title.

Set for Friday at New Earth Music Hall, "Last Comic Standing" is expected to usher in the latest generation of Athens' comic community. Either Eric Slauson (the student) or Marc LaMotte (who is a student affairs specialist at UGA), will win $250 and the headliner spot at the upcoming "Low Down Comedy Open Mic," the first in a series of comedy shows on Wednesdays at the new club on the corner of Dougherty and Hull streets.
"Last Comic Standing" has been produced by local comedian and promoter Chris Patton, an Athens native who saw an opportunity to host an event that would "build for the future."
"When New Earth opened, I ran into (co-owner) Adrian (Zelski), and he said he wanted to try comedy," Patton says. "And I got to thinking about what we could do. I figured we'd try something like 'Last Comic Standing' and have 16 (comics) to start with. We were doing them on Monday nights, which is hard enough, and still got really strong crowds. The audience has grown since we started."
Patton says even though most of the combatants in "Last Comic Standing" were not experienced on stage, he was pleased with the quality of the comedy.
